Mental Illness Treatment
Mental illnesses include a wide range of disorders, disabilities, and conditions that can affect mood, thinking, and behavior. Common mental illnesses include clinical depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADD, ADHD, OCD, and PTSD. Treating a mental illness requires a thorough physical and mental examination, a psychiatric evaluation, and a one-on-one consultation that may include the patient’s parents, caregiver, or guardian. Psychiatrists are mental health specialists that focus on the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders. They often work alongside other health care professionals, such as therapists, psychologists, social workers, and physicians, to comprehensively treat their patients. Treatment for mental illnesses will vary depending on each patient’s unique condition, the type of illness they suffer from, the severity of their condition, any other existing health conditions and medications, and family history. During the initial consultation, we will discuss these factors and determine the extent of their condition by assessing their symptoms and conducting physical and mental examinations. After developing a diagnosis, we will curate a personalized treatment plan that meets the patient’s unique needs. Treatments may include various forms of therapies, such as behavioral, cognitive, talk therapy, psychotherapy, medications, and, in some cases, procedures and surgeries. Many patients with mental illnesses benefit from group or peer therapy as well.
Learning Disability Treatment
Mental health can affect the way in which a person learns, thinks, and behaves. Patients with learning disabilities may suffer from a variety of factors that limit their ability to communicate, understand spoken or written language, engage in social activities, direct or keep attention, or make mathematical calculations. Learning disabilities typically fall under four general categories: spoken language-listening and speaking; written language-reading, writing, and spelling; arithmetic-calculation and concepts; and reasoning-organization and integration of ideas and thoughts. Learning disabilities include but are not limited to dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dyslexia, non-verbal disabilities, and oral/written disabilities. Many learning disabilities can be managed through treatment. Patients can learn managing strategies and implement lifestyle changes to help with organization, time planning, abstract reasoning, long or short-term memory, and attention. Treatment will vary depending on each patient’s unique case and condition, age, family medical history, and any other existing conditions. To properly help patients manage a learning disability, we will curate a personalized treatment plan which will include any medications, treatments, therapies, and supplemental care they will receive. In most cases, this requires involving other healthcare professionals and specialists, such as therapists and school psychologists. Psychiatrists are educated, trained, and well-versed in treating patients with various learning disabilities.
Addiction treatment can greatly influence a patient’s recovery and help prevent relapse. Addiction refers to any substance, thing, or activity that a person persistently uses and craves. Some of the substances that psychiatrists treat include alcohol, stimulants such as meth and cocaine, depressants, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants. The primary goals of addiction treatment are to guide a patient away from their dependency, significantly reduce or eliminate their use of the drug in question, and alter their lifestyle to initiate healthier, stronger values. We attempt to achieve these goals by helping the patient rebuild their core relationships, find employment in an interest or hobby, and restore their personal beliefs and values in all other aspects of their life. These goals may seem broad, but each is personalized to match the patient’s treatment plan according to their medical and psych history, current health status, the severity of addiction, treatment type, substance type, and specifically outlined goals. Treatments for addiction will vary but may include one or a combination of therapies, medications, and mandated group sessions. To begin treatment, we will conduct a thorough physical examination, a full mental health evaluation, and a psychiatric assessment. After developing a diagnosis, we curate an individualized treatment plan tailored to meet their unique needs.
Individual and Family Therapy
Therapy can be given and received by both an individual or an entire family. Individual therapy, typically through talk therapy, psychotherapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, can help manage or completely treat various mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. While individual therapy focuses primarily on a patient’s personal struggles, the purpose of family therapy is to comprehensively treat the problem. Often, family members and other individuals close to the individual play a role in their condition and/or relapse. Family therapy is also provided for family members who wish to treat a problem altogether, such as grief therapy after losing a loved one, marriage counseling and infidelity therapy for couples, and therapy after an accident or traumatic event. Individuals and families can greatly benefit from therapy, especially when the condition or problem affects all or most members of the family, as is the case with most mental illnesses. Psychiatrists are specially educated, trained, and experienced in diagnosing and treating both individuals and families for a wide range of mental health issues and conditions. To begin treatment, we start with a one-on-one consultation to evaluate the patient’s case, conduct a physical examination, discuss their symptoms, assess their current mental state, and curate a custom treatment plan tailored to meet their unique needs.
